This is an example of a Gable Front style Bank Barn. The advantages of a Bank Barn included additional storage space in the cellar level for farm equipment and animals. These types of Barns became increasingly popular in New England after 1850. The Ordway family was heavily invested in the Bow lumber industry. Along with the duties of any small farm, the Ordway's Barns were used to house work horses that assisted with moving heavy loads of lumber. In addition to the Barn, Merrill Ordway's blacksmith shop sits on the opposite side of the road at the intersection of South Bow Road and Ordway Lane.
